Adjudicators: Mark Ashford, Rob Johns, Yvonne Bloor. Eight advanced competition finalists include leading UK and European up and coming guitarists.  A full day of Guitar events in Leicester - fantastic venue, refreshments all day. Come along!

On Saturday evening many of us were treated to a splendid recital from nationally acclaimed guitarist Rob Johns at The Lawn in Lincoln.

Rob began with Drum, one of his own compositions and guided us through a wide-ranging performance the first half of which included the first of the five Villa-Lobos guitar preludes written in 1940, a Brazilian Dance from contemporary Argentinian composer J. Morel and  two pieces from Cuban-born composer Leo Brouwer. The second half opened with two pieces from Spanish baroque composer Gaspar Sanz, included a diversion into the world of the Flamenco Guitar and concluded with another of Rob’s own compositions.

All in all this was a fascinating performance enlivened by Rob’s engaging introductions to each of the works and his passionate and thoughtful approach to his playing. Rob plays guitars by the well-known local maker Roy Courtnall .
